Detroit rose

brand partnership

Detroit Rose is known for their soy candles. Minimal design, soft, natural scents, hand poured in Detroit. They've graced my apartment for years, so a summer partnership was organic. Seeking to transcend the expected & capture the experience of scent, we opted for a blend: enticing, at-home lifestyle imagery, & conceptual scent interpretation of a few of my personal favorites, all shot exclusively on 35mm film.

It begins at home. A sacred space made even more so with scent & flame. Ritual. I place a candle where I ordinarily would, styling naturally, framing carefully. As within their brand, Detroit Rose's skincare is woven in lightly. To embody the bringing of nature inside, the softness, the grounding, some images are less literal.

Capturing what it feels like is the higher art.

scent as experience, nature brought in; a glimpse into the home of an artist

Next, we have BLOOM. A heady floral. Light, but deep. Feminine. If I close my eyes, it reminds me of a meadow in June, thick with pink flowers. Sunrise, for the quiet & the mist-dense air. So that's where — and when — I go.

It's empty & full of life all at once. Dew-soaked. To parallel the scent, I layer: film double exposures with flowers on flowers. Literal and conceptual, simple & abstract, aligned & imperfect. A bouquet.

MOSS is the scent I light when I want to bring the forest inside. It's green, yes, but mainly it's unexpectedly grounding. It's the leather of my foraging bag. It's a terrarium, freshly misted. It's what my plant corner feels like.

It's a walk in the woods.

And lastly, we have SMOKED TOMATO, a scent I fell for unexpectedly. From the name, I imagined something literal: red, gastronomic, smoky. It isn't.

It's surprisingly — and delightfully — green.

It's vegetal, like a tomato plant. Like a greenhouse full of thriving heirlooms. Like being a child among towering, sun-soaked vines in a vegetable garden. Scent is transportive. This is what I aim to alchemize into imagery.

This is where it takes you.

We love how Christina captures a dreamy, ethereal energy.

The colors & settings work beautifully for our brand —  we're excited to share these images & look forward to working with her again.
